Nigerian Dwarf Dairy Goats
Nigerian Dwarf Dairy goats are just about
the cutest livestock in the world!  Their
small size makes them ideal for pets.  They
come in all different colors and coat
patterns, and some even have blue eyes.
They have sweet and gentle personalities,
and are easy for little kids and oldsters to
handle. They are not pushy like some of
the larger breeds and they aren't constantly
trying to tear down their fences.  They
produce a lovely, rich milk that is ideal for
making cheese and goat's milk soaps and
lotions. They are an excellent choice for
homesteaders, although I understand their
meat is NOT edible ;)
We saw our first "Nigies" at a local dairy
goat show.  I had sold off my original small
herd of Nubians to a friend and I was
missing having goats.  (Goats have some
challenging habits, and my Nubians had
exceeded the limits of my patience.  One
day one of my friends said he wanted to
buy them and ---SOLD!! I will never forget
the sight of their faces in the window of the
camper shell as they were driving away.) So
when Rick and I went to this show, I
NEVER realized how many different dairy
breeds there were!  I was awed and amazed!
We were both drawn to the Nigerians.
They were beautiful colors, and they had
these lovely udders.  Even as small as this
show was, I could see the excellent quality
represented.  I had an "AH HA!" moment.
I thought and thought about it. Then I hit
the Internet and started researching
bloodlines.  Through my years breeding
horses, I knew that I needed to start out
with the best quality that I could afford.

My first two does were purchased from
Anne Petersen at Rosasharn Farm. It is still
fun to tell visitors that they flew to
California from Massachusetts! While I was
waiting for my first two precious doelings
(Whimsy and Sister) to grow up enough to
travel, I found a doe for sale out of the
2007 National Champion Woodhaven
Farms Lonesome Dove. Diane
Davis-George from Mini Inspirations Farm
arranged to send Inspirations SM
Zipporah to California with her friend
Katie Lewis from Double Sun Dog Ranch
in AZ.  She arrived shortly before my two
Rosasharn does. NEVER were any goats
treated like such royalty!
When my little does were old enough to
breed, I began looking for a buck.  I was a
little overwhelmed by the importance of this
decision.  I happened to be looking at the
new Flat Rock Farms website and I emailed
Sunni Florence saying how impressed I was
with her new pages.  We
IMMEDIATELY struck up a friendship!
She liked my artwork and asked if I ever
took commission work. So we arranged a
trade.  A buckling from her herd (Flat
Rocks Fiddler) in exchange for a painting of
their foundation doe, Surprise. We even
added a doeling (Flat Rocks Hummingbird)
toward a future painting.  Now THAT is a
good trade!  The painting turned out well
and everyone is happy ;)
Many, many thanks to all of you who have
helped me in this endeavor--most of all to
my dear husband Rick, who has helped
build barns, fences and play structures,
fed, watered, toted hay and grain, petted,
and pampered.  He has won the
FiddleSong Farm award for "Most Patient."
