How to give a pig a shower!
Although pigs are naturally clean
animals, Lucy still gets a "pig shower"
about every two weeks in the summer.

Here is how I do it:

  • I fill two large watering cans with warm water,
and fill a bowl with grapes.  I dilute her special
tar shampoo, for sensitive skin, in some more
warm water and pour it over her back.  Lucy
begins to howl.  Two grapes are applied.
(This usually turns howls of displeasure back into
regular grunts and squeaks.  It is hard to howl and
chew at the same time ;)

  • Now I scrub vigorously with my fingers as
much of Lucy as I can reach without too many
    contortions.  She usually doesn't complain
about this too much, as it is much like rubbing
and scratching.  When she starts to howl
again, I apply a few more grapes.

  • Now I start the rinse cycle.  I begin by pouring
warm water from the first watering can over her
rear end.  Lucy usually starts to run away
(howling) at this point, so I have two options:
#1~Chase Lucy around the yard while trying to
pour the water over her to rinse her, or
#2~
apply more grapes!

I have tried both methods and I always opt for the
grape application as it reduces the howling.  (Lucy
actually likes the warm water, but feels obligated to
play her role as the poor mistreated piggy.)  By
the time I have finished rinsing her with both cans
of water, and Lucy finishes her grapes, she is
squeaky clean!  She shakes off a little, but prefers
to drip dry.

She has very nice house manners.
Here is Lucy's piglet picture.
We brought her home in a cat
carrier, and she was so small
that we could hold her up to
our shoulder to cuddle her.
Of course we thought the
howling was adorable,
then.
