| "Sutter Creek Rock Wall" 7 1/2" x 10", watercolor and Prismacolor pencil |
The rock walls of the Gold Country were built in the late 1800's by immigrant workers who were hired by farmers to clear their fields of stones. The rocks are of the kind that are particular to that property, so they vary in color and size, but they are laid horizontally, with any flat surfaces facing outward, creating a unique wall that is neat, and in several instances have withstood 150 years of weather. Sutter Creek is one of the finest nuggets in Amador County. There are unlimited opportunities for artistic inspiration in this small Gold Town. There are examples of old, but well preserved architecture, tumbled down old farmhouses and barns, rolling hills of green and gold, wildflowers~~and in my explorations, I haven't even scratched the surface, yet!" |
