Living only fifteen minutes from Amador Flower Farms AND Ridge Road Garden Center holds certain challenges, especially if you are a flower addict like me. Amador Flower Farms grows hundreds of varieties of daylilies! I only have a few so far, but they do very well here--IF I can keep the goats away from them!

When Rick and I first purchased our property here in Fiddletown, the yards were open and unfenced, so deer had good access to everything. I learned some really quick lessons the hard way. If you intend to garden, fence your garden and get a dog! That was an EASY fix! We have the cutest little gophers up here, but boy are they destructive! I tried several different ways to protect my plants--I planted in cages, planted in raised beds with hardware cloth bottoms. I tried poisons, but that worried me to death. What if the birds ate the poison, or what if one of the cats or one of the dogs ate a poisoned gopher?
I was standing in the check out afternoon when I overheard a young lady tell an older gentleman what a horrible time she was having with the gophers. "Juicy Fruit" he said to her. "What do you mean?" she asked. "Juicy Fruit gum. Works every time. Put one stick in each hole that you find. Gums 'em up. They can't poop, so they die." OK, so it isn't toxic, and it is cheap, what can it hurt, hmmmmm.. So I casually reached over and snagged two giant packs of Juicy Fruit gum. IT WORKS!

I have planted Pink Lady apples, Fujis and Arkansas Blacks. My apples aren't this beautiful, yet ;)
Swiss Chard 'Bright Lights' Chickens love this, so do goats...

Ridge Road Garden Center has a wonderful selection of native plants, unusual varieties of perennials, trees, roses, shade plants of all kinds--PARADISE! Also they have a knowledgeable, friendly staff who love to help! Their mascot, Graham will greet you with a friendly wag of his long golden tail. Or, you may be greeted by the new pup, who is just as sweet and friendly.
